Particular Ideas are delighted to announce the launch of a new portfolio of prints with the London-based, Italian artist and photographer Alessio Bolzoni. The series, created by printing overlapping photographic stills, consists of 30 unique print variations of six different pairs of images.

The Overlaps, 2021, comprises a series of six works, each featuring a pair of contorted, acrobatically posed bodies layered on top of one another. The figures in the images carry out uneasy, performative postures, with their faces mostly out of sight, giving rise to an unsettling combination of beauty and discomfort. Against this clear white backdrop, perhaps ready to be cleaned in Photoshop to provide the perfect, unblemished location for a high-end advertising campaign, these figures subvert typical fashion editorial scenes. In the purity of this setting, the bodies call into question ideas of control and subjugation, power and powerlessness, aesthetics and agency.

A continuation of Bolzoni’s Abuse series, the genesis of The Overlaps stems from a by-product of the commercial printing process. To clean the printing plates during the creation of his book Abuse II: The Uncanny, already printed pages of his photographs were fed back into the press, leading to an accidental but precise alignment of images on top of each other. The fortuitous result of these perfectly overlapping images helped to further decontextualize the bodies in the photographs. For The Overlaps, Bolzoni has continued to explore this decontextualization, and this accidental process has been repeated intentionally, resulting in 30 slight variations of six overlapping combinations of layered figures.

Alessio Bolzoni (b. 1979 in Crema, Italy) is an artist and photographer whose work consistently crosses back-and-forth between the creative and commercial. He has produced imagery for clients such as Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Off-White and Valentino, and worked extensively with the Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, shooting stills for Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, and We Are Who We Are. Artistic projects include two publications, Abuse and Abuse II: The Uncanny, and the project “Action Reaction” – an exhibition of photographs plastered over 26 billboards across Milan in June 2020. The Overlaps can be viewed at Bolzoni’s joint exhibition with Christopher Orr at HENI Artists Agency, which runs from 3 June–2 July 2021.
