"Images have always been quite closely associated with memory. What I investigate in my work is the way that – with the surplus of images people can look at on the internet – perhaps memories are also interchangeable with the way people consistently make new representations of themselves through images they present to the public."
Nicholas Cheveldave was born in 1984 in Victoria, Canada. He received his MFA at Goldsmiths in 2014.
Using a range of mediums, including installation, books project, multimedia works and collage, Cheveldave explores ideas around the creation and dissemination of images in our contemporary society, by co-opting and subverting techniques from advertising and contemporary communication.
His work is predominantly hand-made, with the process of cutting, pasting, editing and assembling being a fundamental part of his creative process. An element of collecting and sampling also lies at the base of Chelvedaves work; whether trawling the internet or searching through flea markets, he gathers together old imagery ranging from vintage Polaroids and family photos to pictures of empty homes for sale or under renovation.
The images Chelvedave is drawn to have a realness and authenticity that sets them apart from much of the perfect, filtered and Photoshopped imagery that we are accustomed to seeing in our day-to-day lives. He brings together these images of familiar, often nondescript everyday scenes and breaks them down, removing them from their initial contexts. These remnants are then brought together to create new meanings and to challenge the standardised ways in which we are fed and consume images today.
